Description

The Pharmaceutical Work Practice module aims to connect students learning from course studies to the "real world" of the pharmaceutical workplace and vice-versa. Through site visits, student conference, work placement experiences and /or industry related research projects, this class aims to tell many stories of the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland and globally so that students are exposed to

  • The variety of activities/ potential work opportunities that exist in the industry
  • The issues that may arise - technical, quality,

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate a range of personal/professional competencies required in a regulated Health Products research/development /manufacturing workplace. 

2.

Discuss the design and operational aspects of pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities relevant to the current global trade and regulatory context.

3.

Critically reflect on own competencies in relation to specific job or graduate study requirements, identify and address a relevant gaps(s) in skills/knowledge/competency level.

4.

Propose and defend solutions to complex real/simulated workplace problems

5.

Distinguish own role and contribution to team based problem solving

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The module is taught through a variety of modes centered around engagement of students in an authentic professional learning experiences:  The classroom is a professional working environment that requires extensive student participation in co-creating the learning and accountability for managing their learning process. 

Modes include: RPL:Work placement experience,  Lectures/seminars, Team Based Learning, Experiental (workplace) learning, participatory workshops, and documented reflective practice.  

 

Module Assessment Strategies

This module will be assessed as 100% continuous assessment. Students will be required to address learning outcomes through:

  1. Oral presentation ( on Workplace experience or work related project)
  2. Written professional report (on Workplace experience or  work related project)
  3. Student Learning Portfolio which demonstrates active management of own learning and achievement of learning outcomes through:
  • documentation of participation in and proposed solutions of team problem solving workshops 
  • documentation of participation in and recording of key site visit observations and key points from hot topics seminars. 
  • Completion of professional Linked in profile.

Indicative Syllabus

The syllabus can be broken down into the following 4 key elements:

  1. Professional presentations on work placement experience:- Peer/Peer learning supplemented by guest speakers from industry, research and career guidance. 
  2. Simulated real world team problem solving workshops - in partnership with industry professionals: eg Quality QP; Regulatory: HPRA; Lean 6 Sigma,  
  3. Hot Topics Seminars: eg Global Pharmaceutical Trends: Process Analytical Technologies, 
  4. Pharmaceutical Site visits: Focus on Technologies, Quality Systems, Operations management and Employee skill base.
