Description

This module further enhances aspects of organic chemical synthesis building on techniques covered in semester 1.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Recognise a range or organic functional groups and their reactivity

2.

Demonstrate competence in the practical application of a range of synthetic organic chemical techniques.

3.

Calculate chemical yields (theoretical, actual and percent), perform product reconciliation and explain losses

4.

Demonstrate the ability to maintain a proper laboratory notebook, which includes clear descriptions of original data, observations and experimental procedures

5.

Evaluate the risks associated with an experiment and understand how to mitigate against such risks

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. It will consist of laboratory practical sessions. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment.

Module Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed based on laboratory performance. Further assessment methods include a series of pre- and post laboratory assessments as well as Moodle based multiple choice and short answer questions

Repeat Assessments

Students may repeat aspects of the module as required.

Indicative Syllabus

Practical sessions will include functional group inter-conversions, examples may include,

Synthesis of a ketone

Synthesis of an alkene

Synthesis of an alcohol

Synthesis of an ester and ester hydrolysis.
