Description

This module introduces the fundamental principles of pharmacology (pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics) for clinical measurement science. Essential key concepts of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, metabolism, elimination and drug design will be studied. Toxicology and target organ toxicity including the liver, GIT, nervous system, endocrine and cardiovascular disease and treatment will be studied.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Explain key pharmacology concepts including pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics 

2.

Examine the clinical application of therapeutics including anti-inflammatories, analgesics, opioids, anti depressants etc

3.

Outline toxicology, drug toxicity, development and dose response relationships and concepts in a practical manner.

4.

Analyse and describe the physiological interaction between drug therapy for a range of diseases and key organs including the GIT, liver, nervous system, endocrine, cardiovascular system.

5.

Apply an understanding of drug receptor binding, therapeutic mode of action, drug tolerance and addiction

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will consist of online delivery of 1 hours per week including some interactive discussion lectures. Independent learning hours 4 hrs/week will be needed. Active learning will be incorporated in to this module.

A variety of methods of instruction such as discussion, group work, interactive exercises, use of online resources and/or use of audio/visual material will be provided. Core skills will be embedded into all modules to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. This may include academic writing, oral presentations, reading techniques or research abilities.

Lecture will provide tutorials to students on topics and academic writing tutorials where needed.

 

 

Module Assessment Strategies

100% Continuous assessment module with CA ongoing throughout the semester.

CA will include the following:

  • Case Studies
  • Essays
  • Multi-Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • Long Answer Questions (LAQs)
  • Critical analysis of case studies 

Repeat Assessments

Repeat CA will be issued for students needing repeat assessment.

This module contains 'must pass' assessments.  The minimum ‘pass’ mark for this module overall is 50%, in addition to meeting the minimum attendance requirement. 

Indicative Syllabus

  • This module will introduce students to the scientific field of pharmacology where students will gain an understanding of the key concepts of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics.
  • The module is designed to provide a good understanding of the theoretical concepts of pharmacology and will include drug classification, mode of action, clinical side effects, drug dependance, addiction and modes of drug delivery with particular focus on clinical science.
  • The module will provide students with an understanding of the interaction of drug molecules with bodily cells and organs with therapeutic effect, side effects and drug dependence discussed.
  • Toxicology factors relating to drug therapy will be a key components including LC50, therapeutic index etc.
  • This module provides detailed understanding of pharmacology in relation to organ systems linked to GI, Vascular, Neurology, Respiratory and Cardiovascular physiology
  • Understanding the systems and the interactions between the systems is the initial step in learning how a drug affects the body.
  • This module will also describe how a drug's impact occurs when it comes in contact with a chemical component of the body e.g. enzymes, hormones, membranes etc.
  • Key therapeutic agents such as analgesics (non steroidal anti-inflammatories, opioids), anti depressants (SSRI, NSRI, DRI, TCA).
  • Therapeutics specific to the five disciplines of clinical measurement physiology (GI, Vascular, Neurology, Respiratory and Cardiovascular physiology) will be outlined.
  • Applied pharmacology for clinical specialists including drug therapy such as antimicrobials, chemotherapeutics, anaesthetics, analgesics, opioids, anti depressants amongst others will be studied.
  • Important factors such as dose response, ED50, LC50, receptor binding (partial, agonists, antagonist) are to be incorporated demonstrating key clinical concepts.
  • Clinical application of therapeutics for a range body systems.
