Description
This module introduces the fundamental principles of pharmacology. Essential key concepts of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, metabolism and drug design will be studied. Target organ toxicity including the liver, GIT, nervous system disease and treatment will be studied. The module is designed to provide a good understanding of the theoretical concepts of pharmacology and will include drug classification, mode of action, clinical side effects and modes of drug delivery.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Describe and define the basic terms and concepts of pharmacology.
2.
Classify and identify the clinical purpose, mode of action, side effects and resistance issues associated with common drugs.
3.
Understand the mechanisms of disease, treatment and control.
4.
Understand the process of drug metabolism and elimination within the body.
5.
Understand the mode of action an antimcirobial agents, resistance and novel approaches.
6.
Understand drug development from lead compounds to the market.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Online delivery of 1 lecture per week with self directed learning. Guidance provided on relevant areas for self directed learning.
Online delivery of 2 hour workshop weekly, where students will be directed to complete interactive type activities to enhance their study skills and knowledge.

Question and answer sessions provided in the live classroom.
A variety of methods of instruction such as discussion, group work, interactive exercises, use of online resources and/or use of audio/visual material will be provided. Core skills will be embedded into all modules to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. This may include academic writing, oral presentations, reading techniques or research abilities. Accessible materials will be provided to students, including slides, documents, audio/visual material and textbooks enabling students slow down speed up recordings etc in accordance with universal distance learning.
All module content will be based on the principles of UDL to ensure equitable access to content and learning.
Module Assessment Strategies
100% CA module with CA ongoing throughout the semester.
CA will consist of multiple choice and long answer questions via the moodle page and some essay type assignments. CA will be open book.
Students will be assessed in a variety of ways including multiple methods of assessment e.g. technology-enhanced assessment, presentations, projects, MCQ and LAQ.
Students will be given feedback and time to implement feedback in additional assessments to allow for improved CA submission.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat CA if required in the form of essay type assignments.
Indicative Syllabus
This module will introduce students to the scientific field of pharmacology where students will gain an understanding of the key concepts of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. The module will provide students with an understanding of the interaction of drug molecules with bodily cells and organs with therapeutic effect. Part of this module provides a good understanding of organ systems such as the nervous, endocrine and cardiac systems. Understanding the systems is the initial step in learning how a drug affects the body. This module will also describe how a drug's impact occurs when it comes in contact with a chemical component of the body e.g. enzymes, hormones, membranes etc. Some common therapeutic agents such as antibiotics, anti depressant and non steroidal anti-inflammatories will be outlined to demonstrate the concepts of pharmacology.
