PERF08053 2019 Professional Practice in Performing Arts
This module develops the learners awareness of the development and practice of the professional world they will be part of. Learners will have the knowledge and skills to enter the cultural/arts sectors with assurance, awareness and integrity.
Students will consider the following subject matter: their region/city/country as a cultural resource; effective use of funding resources, arts centres, theatres, libraries, galleries, museums and so on. Students will become aware of various professional bodies in Ireland and outside of Ireland; they will become acquainted with the differences in cultural/business approaches to working in the UK, the US, and parts of Europe where our Institute has direct partnerships or connections.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Students will write a general CV, and a CV focussed on their specific area of training
Students will complete a funding application to the Arts Council of Ireland, including a business for their proposed project
Students will make a pitch for funding to their local county council on an imagined project
Students will write a director's pitch to an American theatre company of their choice
Students will apply to Ireland and the UK for funding for a cross-border project
Students will join a professional body of their choice in their related field
Students will do a mock audition (actors) / present a portfolio (designers) to their peers
Students demonstrate health and safety issues, and legal issues that might be considered in their imagined projects

This module is taught through seminars, smaller group‑teaching, student's presentation of research and shared learning

Indicative Syllabus
Learners will utilise their peers within the space to plan and carry out mock auditions for actors/ or mock portfolio presentations in theatre design, using their knowledge of the performing arts industry in Ireland as the basis of their work
Learners will present work from week-to-week demonstrating their familiarity with the Arts Council of Ireland and the different funding opportunities for the different categories of arts practice
Through peer learning, students will analyse different CVs for actors, and theatre designers, reflecting on their strengths and weaknesses
Students will plan an imagined theatre production/performing arts event through to full realisation, with an accompanying production plan and budget.
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the business side of the arts in Ireland - by making a business plan for long-term work in an arts centre
