Description

This practical module is designed to consolidate and develop further the technical voice work of the previous years; strengthen vocal support and power; secure a developed vocal technique for spoken and sung voice; introduce a selection of dialects from the English-speaking world; encourage ownership of the voice through the independent management of practical study and performance. It will further develop the work of the previous years in movement; introduce movement skills that strengthen the student's technique; broaden the imaginative and stylistic use of movement and underpin acting studies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate an extended ability to deploy appropriate vocal behaviour in all aspects of voice.

2.

Support, place and sustain the voice in large performance spaces.

3.

Demonstrate an extended practical ability to speak both modern and heightened text expressively, involving carefully detailed analysis and interpretation and the deployment of a variety of appropriate vocal means in performance.

4.

Show evidence of dialect acquisition by being able to speak selected dialects with some conviction, relating them to character and text.

5.

Construct individually focused warm-ups and cooling down exercises for voice and movement and be equipped to undertake daily practice designed to develop the voice and movement.

6.

Demonstrate an increased level of fitness complexity and expression of performed movement.

7.

Sustain a good level of engagement, across a range of movement and dance styles.

8.

Demonstrate an increased vocabulary and imaginative use of different movement and dance styles.

9.

Show an ability to connect physical skills to character in production.

10.

Reflect on personal progress in vocal and movement practice through a reflective practice journal.

Module Assessment Strategies

Students' voice and movement production will be assessed in practicals, rehearsals and in performance by Continuous assessment.

Repeat Assessments

Individual Project and Reflective Essay.

Indicative Syllabus

Voice - individual tutorials and production support

•·    Extended practical exploration of vocal technique in all its aspects for spoken and sung voice.

•·    Examination of the vocal demands of a large performance space and practical work in supporting and placing the voice in that context.

•·    Continued detailed practical analysis, interpretation and expressive speaking of both modern and heightened texts, bringing them to life in performance.

•·    Practical work on the acquisition of selected dialects, speaking in those dialects which are confident, convincing and related appropriately to character and text.

•·    Construction of warm-ups appropriate to individual need and the independent management of daily practice in voice.

Movement in individual and production support:

  • Memorising and building movement sequences driven from mix of Contemporary Dance Techniques (Duncan, Cunningham, Limon, Release) as construction of warm-ups to strengthen individual and professional physical fitness and development
  • Developing and heightening individual body language, achieved skills, movement elements and techniques from previous years
  • Integrating new body practices and scores of improvisation extending concentration, ability to articulate, divergent thinking, ability to embody concept, self-management and cooperation with others
  • Introduction to various dance styles
  • Master classes of relevant physical disciplines from guest teachers.
