Description

This module further explores costume design and its role in the process of making theatre and film. Skills in costume design and rendition are further developed. Texts and characters are explored through collaborative exercises with a designer as part of a creative team to inform the process of designing costumes. Preliminary skills in researching visual material and techniques in costume design rendition are further developed; combining elements of colour, fabric textures and visual research.Students will develop an understanding of character in performance in terms of age, social status, occupation etc. and through period or unique fantasy framing. Learners expand their technical awareness of the technical requirements of the actor as well as reflecting on character analysis.

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Research and source information necessary for costume design

2.

Develop an understanding of costume design in relation to the interpretation of individual characters and the overall tone of a production

3.

Explore texts in relation to the physical and imaginative requirements of the play and its characters.

4.

Produce a portfolio of costume designs that will include research, moment drawings, sketches.

5.

Acquire skills in research, visual representation and drawing.

6.

Understand differences in designing a costume for stage or screen.

7.

Learn to work as part of a creative team, present and articulate designs, enhance communication skills, decision making, problem-solving skills, time management, organising and planning skills.

Module Assessment Strategies

Costume in performance: Students design and construct a costume for performance.

Presentation of research: Students articulate orally and visually their research process and final design.

Log Book: individual understanding and evaluation of research for costume design. Developing and recording the creative journey involved in costume design.

Indicative Syllabus

General introduction to costume design: What is costume design? What are the key characteristics needed to be a costume designer?

Assessing the role of the costume designer: Realisation of the visual needs of a performance, technical possibilities, the relationship with the play, actors, designers, space and audience.

The demands of the costume designer: finding own approaches to costume design. Recognising the responsibilities of being part of a creative team.

Designing for stage and screen; what are the different challenges in designing for a live audience and for a camera? What to consider when designing costumes seen in a full frame or in close up camera detail.

The processes involved in the journey from costume realisation to performance which might include characterisation, movement, technical needs, research, costume cutting and sowing, drawing and collage.
