Description

This is a practical voice and movement module aimed at increasing physical, spatial and vocal awareness and grounded in the ongoing development of the student through technical exercises aimed at developing professional skills in voice and movement. Students will be expected to develop a series of techniques and principles both physical and vocal, and assess their individual progress as well as apply techniques to solo composition study, oral literature (poetry, drama), rehearsals and performance.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Understand and apply voice and movement techniques to develop appropriate warm-ups and training skills.

2.

Demonstrate increased self-awareness of use of voice, body and space as a performer.

3.

Integrate variety of vocal/physical techniques in the context of performance.

4.

Apply vocal techniques (resonance, pitch, tone, colour, projection, breath support/control, posture, alignment etc.) to chosen texts.

5.

Apply and embody elements of compositional devices and structure into the creative process of Solo Composition study.

6.

Use reflective journaling and researched topic to develop practical skills and self-awareness.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Student-centred strategies for teaching Voice and Movement.

Student learning incorporating aspects as following:

  1. Kinaesthetic – motor development (moving and learning)
  2. Aesthetic -  personal (artistic) growth
  3. Cognitive – intellectual (thinking, perceiving and processing)
  4. Psychological – social (feeling and interacting)

Module Assessment Strategies

Continuous assessment: observation of student practical work during the class and performance within the combination of formative feedback during the creative process of solo/ensemble project making.

Repeat Assessments

Individual Project:

  • Solo Project and additional Research
  • Solo Performance/ Recital and additional Research

Indicative Syllabus

Development of the student as competent performer through integration of principles of movement and voice, using:

  • Warm up exercises to increase vocal, physical and mental ability
  • Organic breathing and Chekov Technique identifying and rectifying habits that impede communication
  • Voice exercises and use of Shakespearean text
  • Features of movement awareness exploring the components of space and time: fundamentals of Laban Movement Analysis and concept of Space Harmony in combination with Contemporary Dance Approach (quality, size and precision of the movement, its shape, focus, tempo, rhythm, kinesphere, general space, performing space, dimension, pathways and vertical space.)
  • Further explorations in movement and voice practice integrating an imagination;
  • Solo Composition Study: selection and use of particular explored movement techniques/concept, further experimentation and improvisation, compositional structure, developing movement efficiency and expressiveness, rehearsal, performance.

Theoretical framework within the practised topic supporting students' learning.
