Description

This module is aimed at bridging the gap for entrants from alternate disciplines through an accelerated overview of the fundamental principles in Human Nutrition and Exercise Physiology & Metabolism.

The Human Nutrition Section describes the dietary sources, function and metabolism of macro- and micronutrients, and other biologically active substances, discussing key nutritional aspects that contribute to healthy growth and development throughout life.

Understanding of the fundamentals of exercise training, the regulation of metabolic processes by which muscles derive energy during exercise, as well as mechanisms underpinning both acute and chronic physiological adaptations to training, disuse and metabolic disease will also be achieved in the Exercise Physiology & Metabolism sections.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Discuss the importance of macro- and micronutrients, energy balance and metabolism including digestion, absorption, and symptoms associated with deficiencies

2.

Discuss key nutritional aspects of different population groups at each stage of the life cycle and critically evaluate variations in nutritional demand due to physical activity level, age and gender, physiological and health status 

3.

Assess and evaluate nutritional status at different life stages

4.

Critically evaluate the evidence for some of the key factors which influence food and nutrient intake and its association with diseases

5.

Explain variations in physiological responses and metabolism during, and as a result of regular exercise, associated with selected population sub-groups in comparison to the general population.

6.

Explain types of exercise training with varying aims, and discuss the associated acute & chronic physiological responses in bodily systems

7.

Describe the structure and function of skeletal muscle and discuss metabolic processes during muscular contraction

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered through online weekly lectures. This will consist of two hours of lectures per week as well as two hours of asynchronous learning which will consist of interactive and forum discussions and MCQ's. In addition, the learner will be expected to allocate an additional 6 hours per week for continuous assessment and additional reading. 

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% continuous assessment which will consist of two written assignments (case study where students apply nutritional knowledge to a certain risk group or health situation; and review of the acute and chronic adaptations made to a specified exercise training emphasis and population group) and short sporadic Theory Assessments spread across the semester: 2-4 computer-based assessments will be offered weighted between 10-20% each.
