NUTR09016 2019 Leadership in Public Health Nutrition
This module will provide graduate students with an understanding of leadership and advocacy as it pertains to public health nutrition.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Demonstrate effective communication and advocacy skills to positively influence health and nutrition environment.
Illustrate the key concepts of leadership theory and the key differences between management and leadership and their relevance to public health nutrition
Critically analyse the complexities of leading and motivating people in public health nutrition
Consciously reflect on own/aspired public health nutrition professional practice
Apply ethical values to public health decision making
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered through online weekly lectures. This will consist of a one hour lecture per week as well as one hour of asynchronous learning which will consist of interactive and forum discussions and MCQ's. In addition the learner will be expected to allocate an additional 5 hours per week for continuous assessment and additional reading.
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 100% continuous assessment which will consist of both self-reflection as well as the development of an advocacy campaign.

Indicative Syllabus
Leadership theories; leadership styles; exploration of self as leader; apply ethical values to public health nutrition decision making; advocacy; consequentialism; stewardship model; social justice; group dynamics; relationship between leadership and organisational change; self-reflection skills and creative problem solving and decision making in complex environments; use of the political process to advance health and nutrition agendas, examples of health and nutrition advocacy in practice
