Description

This module is intended to provide an understanding of the principles and methods used in nutritional assessment for population health and research. It will cover topics such as dietary intake assessment methodology, body composition techniques and the role of biochemistry in nutritional assessment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Assess the advantages, limitations and appropriate applications of the main methods of dietary, anthropometric and laboratory assessments of nutritional status

2.

Critique the most appropriate dietary, anthropometric and laboratory methods to use when assessing the nutritional status of an individual

3.

Critically interpret and evaluate scientific papers that use dietary, anthropometric or laboratory methods to determine nutritional status

4.

Analyse and interpret nutritional assessment data for individuals and groups

5.

Appraise and interpret how biology, biochemistry, assessment technology, bias and measurement error influence nutritional assessment data

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered online and will consist of weekly lectures of one hour duration.  The second hour will be used for asynchronous learning through discussion forums as well as facilitated group discussions. In addition the learner will be expected to allocate an additional 5 hours per week for continuous assessment and additional reading.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% continuous assessment and will consist of the application and evaluation of dietary assessment methods, critically interpreting the use of a nutrition database as well as a critical review.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat continuous assessment if required.

Indicative Syllabus

Indicators of nutritional status - anthropometry; biochemical measures; clinical information; dietary intake and social and environmental factors.

An examination of nutritional surveillance systems in both developed and developing countries. Evaluation of the uses and limitations of these systems as a basis for improving nutritional status.

Dietary assessment measures and dietary analysis software.

Evaluation, selection and use of dietary, anthropometric, biochemical and function indicators of nutritional status as well as ecological data and vital statistics. Consideration of the methods for assessing nutritional status in population sub groups including: children, adults, the elderly, athletes.

Range of measures and methods used to assess body composition- reliability and validity of measurements taken and interpretation.

Consideration for the derivation of reference data i.e. child growth data, BMI, waist circumference and other percentile charts.
