Description

The Research Methods module provides a critical overview of the main methods and approaches used for research into areas related to sport and exercise nutrition, in-depth knowledge of planning and designing research studies, quantitative research techniques, methods of data analysis, ethical considerations in research, and skills in presenting research findings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Discuss the key statistical issues including analysis, sampling, study size and statistical power

2.

Reflect upon an wide range of qualitative and/or qualitative methods and discuss their main advantages and challenges 

3.

Critically evaluate the given issue in the area of sports nutrition and using quantitative and/or qualitative approach prepare the research proposal

4.

 Discuss the ethical issues that must be considered when using human subjects for research purpose

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered through online weekly lectures. This will consist of a one hour lecture per week as well as one hour of asynchronous learning which will consist of interactive and forum discussions. In addition the learner will be expected to allocate an additional 5 hours per week for continuous assessment and additional reading. 

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% continuous assessment which will consist of both qualitative research study as well as the development of the MSc research proposal

Indicative Syllabus

Overview of research process: the nature of research; unscientific versus scientific methods of problem solving; types of research

Identifying the research problem: purpose of the literature review, basic literature search methodologies, identification of research hypothesis, assumptions, delimitations, and limitations, study significance. 

Formulating the method, principals in planning an experiment, participants and instruments

Overview of study designs 

Ethical issues and considerations in research
