Description

This module aims to provide an introduction to the basic principles of sports nutrition and the use of nutritional strategies to optimise performance in sport and exercise.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Discuss the effects of macronutrients and micronutrients on exercise performance.

2.

Understand the role and regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance.

3.

Describe the beneficial/ harmful effects of food supplements and ergogenic aids.

4.

Recognise the nutritional needs of specific sports and particular issues for consideration in sports and exercise nutrition.

5.

Estimate nutritional requirements for athletes and understand the concepts of energy balance, energy expenditure, physical activity and fitness, body mass and body composition.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

A variety of learning and teaching methods will be used in the delivery of this module including lectures, online materials, workshops/ practicals and student presentations. Students will have access to lecture information and additional resources through Moodle.

Module Assessment Strategies

Continuous assessment will comprise of class tests, practical reports and a review of a sports nutrition related topic.
