Description

To develop a comprehensive knowledge of nutritional assessment (dietary, anthropometric and biochemical) in humans through the lifecycle for application in the clinical, public health/epidemiological and experimental research settings

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Conduct and interpret anthropometric measurements and become familiar with their strengths and limitations across the life span

2.

Analyse the nutritional content of the diets of individuals and groups using up-to-date computer software and internationally standardized food composition data

3.

Describe how biology, biochemistry, assessment technology, bias and measurement error influence nutritional assessment data

4.

Design and conduct an appropriate dietary assessment with respect to the life stage of the target client or population group, aims of the investigation and available resources

5.

Describe and evaluate each anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary method individually with respect to their use in public health, clinical and research settings

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops/practicals.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module will be assessed through both continuous assessment (60%) and a final exam at the end of the module (40%).

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessments wil be conducted as per institute and school policy.

To meet Association for Nutrition requirements for registration students will need to pass (obtain at least 40%) both the continuous assessment component and the final exam.

Indicative Syllabus

Lectures will cover the principles and methods used in nutritional assessment in research, public health, and clinical settings e.g. overview of dietary, biochemical and anthropometric assessment

Practicals will allow students to acquire and develop the technical skills of dietary, anthropometric, biochemical and clinical assessment.
