Description

This module introduces the concept of nutrition and special dietary considerations at each stage of the life cycle from pre-conception to nutrition in the older adult with consideration for sub-population groups such as vegetarians, vegans, ethnic minority groups and low-income groups.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Recognise how nutritional needs may change due to age, gender, physical activity and lifestyle factors

2.

Describe the nutritional requirements of people with different cultural/ religious practices that influence their food choice

3.

Demonstrate awareness of current government guidelines in relation to the diet such as infant feeding, weaning, healthy eating and dietary reference values

4.

Consider financial, social and environmental circumstances on diet and nutritional intake

5.

Understand the factors that affect an individual’s, communities’ and population groups’ nutritional needs and practices

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered primarily through lectures and online resources. The information covered will be supported by workshops which will incorporate group activities and student presentations to facilitate student-led learning.

Module Assessment Strategies

Learning outcomes for this module will be assessed using class tests, group presentations and written reports focused on particular nutrition related issues/ stages in the life cycle.
