The aim of this module is to provide the student with essential skills that will underpin core areas of nutrition
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
To become competent in the various forms of scientific communication
To become familiar with mathematic applications in relation to nutritional biochemistry, food science and food analysis along with associated software for nutrition and statistical applications.
To become familiar with the sourcing and interpreting of evidence-based information
Describe and numerically summarise quantitative data using appropriate descriptive statistics
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Teaching and learning of the syllabus for this module will be carried out through a combination of lectures, computer based analysis software, workshops and student presentations.

Indicative Syllabus
Mathematical applications in food and nutrition, Interpreting figures and tables presented in scientific articles in nutrition, how the hierarchy of evidence and study design contributes to different levels of evidence in nutrition research, referencing using Endnote, communication skills, introduction to basis statistics, graphical representation of data including frequency tables and charts, measures of central tendency, position and dispersion.
