Description

The module aims to provide students with an opportunity to develop new skills and aptitude required to pursue an active role in a range of marketing positions. The module will allow students to gain new knowledge and acquire professional marketing skills in a business environment. In addition the student will develop the skills and know-how required to prepare professionally for employment opportunities including the creation of professional documentation and interview development.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Successfully secure and complete a suitable work placement.

2.

Display key professional competence in communication, interpersonal, problem-solving and organising skills in a work based setting.

3.

Display the ability to work in a team environment by working cooperatively with others in an organisation.

4.

Accept and display the need to ensure professional ethical standards and appreciate the need for confidentiality in the employers business.

5.

Display the ability to manage a work based project by adhering to the organisations policies and procedures, ensuring excellent time management, practising good project management principles and ensuring task completion outcomes and deadlines are met.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will prepare graduates for complex roles in a rapidly changing technological world, advancing and disseminating knowledge. The teaching and learning strategy encompasses lectures, guest lectures, one-to-one mentoring and lab-based tutorial support.

Module Assessment Strategies

Semester 5

  • Produce a CV, cover letter and LinkedIn profile as part of their preparation to apply for a suitable work placement.

  • Prepare for and participate in a mock interview as part of work placement preparation

Semester 6

  • Secure a work placement

  • Complete a work placement with a suitable employer.

  • Submit weekly online diaries throughout work placement.

  • Submit a work placement portfolio on completion of work placement.

  • Work placement tutors will visit students on placement to speak with their supervisor and assess the students performance in terms of team work, professionalism, commitment to work placement, time management and project management.

This module is assessed only on a pass/fail basis.

Repeat Assessments

Students will have an opportunity to resubmit failed elements of the continuous assessment. The repeat assessment may include a project.  To avail of repeat assessment options, students must have deemed to have completed the work placement hours.

 

Module Dependencies

Prerequisites
Students must engage with work placement preparation lectures in Semester 5 if they wish to go on work placement in semester 6.

Indicative Syllabus

Placement Preparation- Semester 5 (LO1)

  • Produce a CV, cover letter and LinkedIn profile as part of their preparation to apply for a suitable work placement.

  • Prepare for and participate in a mock interview as part of work placement preparation.

  • Attend workshops designed to assist with CV writing, self presentation and networking skills.

  • Research and identify suitable work placement businesses.

 

Workplace Performance- Semester 6 (LO 1,2,3,4,5)

  • Secure a work placement.

  • Complete a work placement with a suitable employer for 5 days per week over 8 weeks. Students are required to work 7 hours per day with a total of 280 working hours.

  • Attendance and punctuality should be strictly adhered to throughout the placement.

  • Appropriate dress code should be adhered to throughout the placement.

  • The student will be expected to perform assigned duties in an acceptable manner for their employer.

  • The student should show an aptitude and an interest in the work assigned by employer.

  • Take instruction from work placement supervisor and complete all tasks assigned accurately and to a high standard.

  • Produce work within the time constraints allowed.

  • Adhere to the employer's acceptable usage and other policies and procedures.

  • Exercise discretion and confidentiality in all aspects of company procedures.

  • Communicate with peers, supervisors and customers in an acceptable manner.

  • Use all equipment in an acceptable and careful manner.

  • Observe Health and Safety regulations.

 

Record all Progress- Semester 6 (LO 1, 5)

  • Submit weekly online diaries throughout work placement

  • Keep a daily record of work completed and tasks allocated in a time log.

  • Submit a work placement portfolio on completion of work placement.

Total Module Contact Time= 320 hours 

  • Work Placement Preparation Semester 5: 1 hour per week x 13 weeks = 13 hours

  • Work Placement Preparation Semester 6: 1 hour per week x 7 weeks (approx. up to Easter Break) =7 hours

  • Work Placement 280 hours (7 hours per day x 5 days per week x 8 weeks)

  • Independent learning: 20 hours  

Semester 5

  • 1 hour lecture per week x 13 weeks

  • Students will attend a one hour weekly workshop with their work placement tutor to prepare for work placement in semester 6.

  • Students will also be required to use one hour per week independently to prepare all relevant work placement documentation to include drafting a cover letter for application, curriculum vitae, LinkedIn profile and interview preparation.

Semester 6 

  • 1 hour lecture per week x 7 weeks (approx. up to Easter Break)

  • Students will attend a one hour weekly workshop with their work placement tutor to assist with application for work placement later in the semester.

  • Students will also be required to use one hour per week independently to seek out potential work placement opportunities, interview and secure work placement. They must complete all necessary documentation before work placement begins.

  • Students must complete work placement with a suitable employer 5 days per week for a total of 8 weeks (7 hour working day).
