Description

The module aims to provide students with an opportunity to develop new skills and aptitude required to pursue an active role in a range of marketing positions. The module will allow students to gain new knowledge and acquire professional skills in a business environment. In addition the student will develop the skills and know-how required to prepare professionally for employment opportunities including the creation of professional documentation and interview development.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate the ability to prepare a job application and sucessfully secure a suitable work placement.

2.

Display in a work based setting key professional competence in communication, interpersonal, problem-solving and organising skills.

3.

Display the ability to work in a team environment by working co-operatively with others in an organisation.

4.

Accept and display the need to ensure professional ethical standards and appreciate the need for confidentiality in the employers business.

5.

Display the ability to manage a work based project by adhering to the organisations policies and procedure, ensuring excellent time management, practicing good project managment principles and ensuring task completion outcomes and deadlines are met.

6.

Complete a work placement with a suitable employer.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will prepare graduates for complex roles in a rapidly changing technological world, advancing and disseminating knowledge.

Module Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed on the basis of

  1. Work Preparation Submissions, to include application, Curriculum Vitae and interview preparation including both documents and practical.
  2. Visits by tutors to workplace to speak with supervisor and assess student performance in terms of team work, professionalism, commitment to work placement, time managment, project management.
  3. Submission of a diary of work kept by the student
  4. A standard report provided to the senior member from the organisation in which the student is placed will be used to assess the success of the student.

The placement/project is assessed only on a pass/fail basis.

 

 

Repeat Assessments

Repeat as agreed by the programme board and the Head of Department of Marketing, Tourism and Sport.

Indicative Syllabus

Placement Preparation

  • Research and Identify suitable work placement business;
  • Produce and submit work placement documents such as Curriculum Vitae and letter of application;
  • Interview preparation and completion;
  • The student will keep a daily/weekly diary of work activities undertaken during preparation. 

Workplace Performance

  • Complete work experience to run for 2 days per week during Semester 2.
  • Attendance and punctuality should be strictly adhered to throughout the placement
  • Appropriate dresscode should be adhered to throughout the placement
  • The student will be expected to perform assigned duties in an acceptable manner for their employer
  • The student should show an aptitude and an interest in the work assigned by employer
  • Take instruction from supervisor and complete all tasks assigned accurately and to a high standard.
  • Produce work within the time constraints allowed
  • Adhere to the employer's acceptable usage and other policies and procedures
  • Exercise discretion and confidentiality in all aspects of company procedures
  • Communicate with peers, supervisors and customers in an acceptable manner
  • Use all equipment in an acceptable and careful manner
  • Observe Health and Safety regulations

Record all Progress

  • Keep a Daily record of work complete, tasks allocation and contribution made to the organization.
  • This diary should keep a record of new experiences including teamwork, meetings, use of new methods, machines, practices, tasks, technology and any new skills the student develops.

Additional Information

A total of 250 hours will be required for this module.

Semester 5  - Students will be required to use 2 hours per week independently to prepare all relevant work placement documentation to include seeking out potential jobs, drafting letter of application, curriculum vitae and interview preparation and completion with prospective employers.  

A supervisor will work with the students during this time to assist with documentation, seeking out suitable employers and preparation for work experience.

Semester 6 - Students must complete work placement which will run for 2 days per week for a total of 13 weeks (est. 7-8 hour working day) therefore total work placement hours per week 14 hours.

In addition they will keep a diary reflecting on work complete.  Additional hours for travel, reflection, preparation for work up to 3 hours may be required.
