Description

This module aims to provide the learner with a fundamental understanding of the key elements and phases of Project Management from concept to project completion so to enable the learner to more effectively manage engineering / construction projects. The module will investigate the major project management tools and techniques which will aid decision making and assist in project management and leadership.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Assess and analyse the key sociocultural areas, which impact on project delivery, such as leadership, motivation, managing stakeholder expectations, influencing, networking, ethics and the creation and management of high performance project teams.

2.

Demonstrate a wide and systematic knowledge of project management principles and their practical application in of engineering projects from conception to closure.

3.

Analyse and evaluate the main tools available for sucessful project planning and implementation. (such as WBS, time, cost and resource estimation techniques, network diagrams, PERT, LOB, EVA, etc )

4.

Have a critical awareness of the changing project environment in order to forecast and manage risks and challenges so that project deliverables and stakeholders expectations are achieved.

5.

Critically anaylyse the need to Deliver value for money by using best practise appraisal, procurement and contract strategies. Critically analyse the effect procurement and contract management strategies have on the overall project system.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

  • This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques.

     This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar), workshops and work based learning where relevant along with guest lectures and augmented by independent learning and directed learning.

     This approach is expected to address student learning needs.

     Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. presentations and recordings of online lectures plus supplementary reading material and additional resources).

     Moodle will also be further used as a means of assessment, utilising online quizzes, for the uploading of assignments and reports.

     This multi‑faceted, blended approach of; lectures, workshops and online resources fosters collaborative student learning.

Module Assessment Strategies

  • Module will be assessed using a combination of end of semester final exam (60%), continuous assessment and course work (40%).

  • The following assessment strategy will be used

  • Individual and team based assignments, projects and presentations
  • Utilisation of quizzes in order to provide instant feedback.

  • Assignments, projects and presentations to demonstration practical use and application of project management tools and techniques through case studies and real life projects.
