MGMT08019 2019 Operations Management
This module provides an insight into the activities that are involved in the creation of a product or service. Operations Performance and Strategy, Process Design and different Manufacturing Layouts are introduced. The nature of planning and controlling, capacity and inventory management are outlined. Supply Chain Management, Enterprise Resource Planning and lean Operations are addressed.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Apply the principles of operations management to a variety of businesses and organisations.
Identify the steps involved in product and process design and understand the different types of process layout.
Use different planning and control techniques relating to projects, capacity, inventory and material
Communicate the concept of operations networks and supply chain management
Demonstrate an understanding of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
Display an understanding of Lean operations
Demonstrate a knowledge of lean manufacturing tools and techniques
Display an appreciation of the impact of the operation on the environment.

- Introduction to Operations Management: operations within an organisation. The process transformation model. Operations performance objectives. The Triple Bottom Line and Sustainability
- Design in Operations Management: The volume -variety effect on operations design. The network perspective. Long-term capacity management. The layout procedure. The basic layout types. Detailed design of the layout.
- Project Planning and Control: Successful project management. Network analysis. Critical Path calculations.
- Planning and Control - Capacity, Inventory and Supply Chain: the nature of planning and control. Planning and control activities. Capacity planning and control. Alternative capacity plans. Inventory planning and control. The volume decision. The timing decision. Supply chain planning and control. Supply chain management.
- ERP: What is MRP, MRPII and ERP. MRPII calculations.
- The Lean philosophy. The Five Principles of Lean. Lean manufacturing tools and techniques.
