Description

This course will examine the strategic importance of good supply chain design, planning and operation for organisations. It focuses on the improvement of enterprise and supply chain performance by coordinating information and material flows, managing supplier relations and logistics, and forming strategic alliances with partners. It will provide students with the abilities to critically evaluate the strategic importance of effective supply chain management and the various approaches, opportunities and challenges supply chains face in modern organisations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Explain the strategic importance of supply chain management and the various approaches to supply chain design, planning and operation

2.

Explain the central role of the customer in the supply chain and the importance of strategic alignment with other organisational functions in delivering customer value

3.

Evaluate performance objectives in the supply chain and explain how supply chains compete in terms of time, cost, quality and sustainability

4.

Explain the need to coordinate processes, the opportunities and techniques for collaboration between partners within supply chains and the technology that enables this.

5.

Discuss some of the more significant trends in supply chain management at present such as Blockchain, sustainability and RFID technologies and assess the likely future development of supply chains

Teaching and Learning Strategies

  • Group research project to to develop students' teamwork and research skill and to compare and critically assess the practice of SCM in industry-leading organisations.

Module Assessment Strategies

MC Quizzes in weeks 4, 8 and 12 to encourage students to read the relevant materials and to assess their understanding of SCM concepts.

Research/company-based project to assess students skills in information acquisition, assessment and synthesis by applying theory to practical implications with an organisation with whom they are familiar or their employer organisation.
