This module provides the student with the opportunity to explore and evaluate contemporary management issues facing managers in the work environment.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Critically explore the impact of organisational culture on effective management practice.
Explore the increasing diversity of the workforce and describe strategies and techniques for managing diversity.
Describe the key sources of occupational stress and assess strategies for managing it.
Explore the role of employee engagement in the work environment.
Assess the impact of technology on organisational communication.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
The student will engage with the content of the module through lectures, case studies, problem based learning and use of interactive multi-media tools.
Module Assessment Strategies
A combination of written research reports, oral presentations and end of semester examination will be used as appropriate for assessment purposes.

- Explain the dimensions of organisational culture
- Explore the factors that determine and maintain an organisation's culture
- Clarify how organisational culture is transmitted to employees
- Evaluate the impact of organisational culture on management practice
2. Employee Engagement
- Explain the concept of employee engagement
- Outline how organisations measure employee engagement
- Describe the benefits of employee engagement
- Examine strategies to help managers create a culture of employee engagement
3. Managing Workforce Diversity
- Examine the drivers behind diversity initiatives
- Explore the business case for managing diversity
- Discuss the managerial challenges of managing diversity
- Describe how organisations can foster diversity in the workplace
4. Managing Occupational Stress
- Identify the sources of stress in the work environment
- Explore the variables that differentiate people in terms of their ability to handle stress
- Discuss the psychological, physiological and behavioural symptoms of stress
- Examine organisational and personal strategies for managing occupational stress
5. Managing Communication and Technology
- Describe the communication process
- Explain the barriers to effective communication
- Describe how technology affects managerial communication and organisations
- Discuss contemporary issues in communication
