Description

This subject aims to develop student knowledge of and skill in the use of commonly used operations management planning/control and improvement techniques, as well as improve their awareness of the challenges for operations managers.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Examine the basic planning techniques needed to translate demand into operational activity.

2.

Describe and evaluate the methods used by organisations in all sectors to procure, handle and store the materials that they need.

3.

Measure the capability of a process and describe and evaluate techniques used to improve operational performance

4.

Interpret the unique features of Projects, evaluate key stages in project management and be capable of applying project planning and control techniques

5.

Perceive and evaluate the challenges faced by operations managers at present and in the future.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

  • Lectures and class discussion to develop an understanding of OM concepts and practices.
  • Accessible course material such as lecture notes and supporting readings, case studies and video links available on Moodle.
  • Active Learning applied in tutorials to discuss lecture material, industry developments and case studies.
  • Company case studies to give students an understanding of the practice of OM in organisations.
  • Flipped classroom in providing students with required reading material for classroom discussion.
  • Group research project to to develop students' teamwork and research skill and to compare and critically assess the practice of OM in industry-leading organisations.

 

Module Assessment Strategies

MC Quizzes in weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 to encourage reading on the topics and to assess understanding of the concepts

Final written exam to get an overall assessment of student understanding of concepts and to give them an opportunity to demonstrate competence in the application of the techniques.
