Description

This module introduces the learner to the theory and practice of management within the leisure and services sector.  The learner will explore of the main functions of management and the issues that surround business today. The learner will gain an insight to the Business Environment and the impact and challenges of managing the environment. This module looks specifically at the environment that the Sports and Leisure Industry operates in. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Explain the role of and characteristics of a manager.

2.

Recognise the different theories of management and the impact they have on the development of management thought.

3.

Identify and explain the elements that make up the macro and micro business environment.

4.

Display knowledge of the functions of management.

5.

Identify and explain current issues facing managers in the sports and services sector.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

To facilitate effective learning the students will have formal lectures and tutorials. During the lectures students will be provided with slides and other papers that are relevant to this areas of study.  In addition think/pair/share and small group discussions will be facilitated which will give the students and opportunity to work through cases or scenarios in management and the group may share their findings with the whole class at the end of the discussion.   

Module Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed through a group project. This may include reviewing a case study or prepare a project that cover key areas of management and the business environment. The student will work with a team. This will assist the students in their understanding of business management theory as it applies to a business situation. They will present their findings.

A final examination will assess the student's level of understanding of the theory and their ability to apply it to real world management issues. This will be a closed-book formal exam.

The repeat assessment will be reflective of the original assessment.

  • Organising (purpose of organising; organisational structure; organisational principles; recent trends)
  • Leading (understand leadership theories in management)
  • Controlling (the control process; types of control; characteristics of effective control) 
  • Staffing (motivation, human relations, organisational culture)

 

The Business Environment

  • Macro and micro business environment 
  • Examine the National Governing Bodies of Sport and the environment that Irish Leisure and Sport Business operate within
