Description

This module will provide a thorough introduction to supervisory management and focus on practical tools and techniques for effective supervision. It is intended to provide the student with the skills and techniques required to manage staff in a modern organisation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Illustrate a number of tools and techniques for time management, decision making and problem solving

2.

Describe the benefits of teamwork and how to motivate staff. Demonstrate an understanding of leadership.

3.

Explain appropriate interview skills for various situations.

4.

Provide an overview of Industrial Relations, Employment Law and Health and Safety requirements.

Module Assessment Strategies

Continuous Assessment                                                                                             30%

Continuous assessment may be in the form of weekly mini assignments or quizzes, plus a mini project or report 

Final Examination: One written two hour paper                                               70%    

Indicative Syllabus

 

1.      Understanding how teams work: Group dynamics and managing groups

2.      Motivation: Various theories including Maslow. Hot to improve motivation

3.      Leadership understanding and theories including trait, style, action-centred leadership and superleadership.

4.    Interviewing skills for various situations including employment, performance appraisal, councelling, disciplinary and grievances.

5.    Overview of Industrial Relations: Describe Instruction relations and the function of unions and organisations.

6.    Employment law basic principles for Ireland.  The legal qualities, duties and rights of the employer/ employee relationship. Irish Labour legislation and contract termination.

7.    The Importance of Health and Safety: Irish health and safety legislation and supervisor's responsibilities.
