Description

This module will provide a thorough introduction to supervisory management and focus on practical tools and techniques for effective supervision. It is intended to provide the student with the skills and techniques required to manage staff in a modern organisation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate an understanding of supervisory management and its evolution. Be able to describe a supervisor's role and responsibilities.

2.

Explain the skills and qualities of an effective supervisor.

3.

Describe different types of interpersonal behaviour and how to act assertively.

4.

Illustrate a number of tools and techniques for time management, decision making and problem solving

Continuous Assessment                                                                                             30%

Continuous assessment may be in the form of weekly mini assignments or quizzes, plus a mini project or report 

Final Examination: One written two and a half hour paper                                               70%    

Indicative Syllabus

 1.      Understanding Supervisory Management: What supervisors do, how their position fits into the organisational structure, responsibilities. How supervisory management evolved historically.

2.      Management Role of Supervisors: Supervisor's management role and functions of management.

3.      The Effective Supervisor: Skills for effective supervision and appreciation of self development.

4.      Interpersonal Skills and assertive supervision: Interpersonal behaviours- aggressive, passive and assertive. How to be assertive.

5.      Time management: Principles of time management and effectiveness

6.      Decision Making and Problem Solving: Decision making process, how to make effective decisions and consensus decision making.
