Description

This module aims to increase the learner's knowledge and understanding of the areas of corporate social responsibility, ethics, change management, organisational learning and knowledge management in organisations. The module will focus on the application of theory and concepts in each of these areas, as well as the use of practical examples and case studies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of corporate social responsibility in a contemporary business environment.

2.

Explain the stances that an organisation can adopt in relation to ethics.

3.

Evaluate the change process and the successful management of change within organisations.

4.

Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of organisational learning and knowledge management in modern organisations.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The student will engage with the content of the module through lectures, case studies, problem based learning and the use of interactive multi-media tools.

Module Assessment Strategies

A combination of multiple choice tests, group work and end of semester examination will be used as appropriate for assessment purposes.

Indicative Syllabus

1. Corporate Social Responsibility:

  • Contrast the classical and socioeconomic views of social responsibility,
  • Examine the pillars of corporate social responsibility - workplace, community, marketplace and environment,
  • Discuss the benefits of corporate social responsibility initiatives,
  • Discuss current social responsibility issues.

2. Ethics in the Workplace:

  • Examine the factors that lead to ethical and unethical behaviour,
  • Describe management's role in encouraging ethical behaviour,
  • Discuss current ethical issues in business.

3. The Management of Change:

  • Examine the forces for organisational change,
  • Understand why individuals resist organisational change,
  • Describe techniques for reducing resistance to change,
  • Discuss contemporary issues in managing change.

4. Organisational Learning and Knowledge Management:

  • Explore how learning theories can be applied in the workplace,
  • Describe the concept of a learning organisation,
  • Explain the concept of knowledge management,
  • Examine knowledge management systems.
