MECT06020 2018 Electromechanical Technology 101
This Module introduces the student into practical electrical wiring for industry.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Work safely in an electrical workshop setting.
Identify and specify cables and cable systems for ELV and LV systems.
Identify, specify and install functional and protection devices for ELV and LV systems.
Terminate solid and stranded cables for ELV and LV systems.
Read, and create layout diagrams, wiring diagrams and schematic diagrams for ELV and LV control and power circuits.
Construct, test and troubleshoot ELV and LV lighting, power and motor control circuits
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be taught in the electrical workshop using a blend of instruction, demonstration, and application (practical).
The students will be taught small chunks of theoretical material which will include extensive demonstration using the varied resources available in the workshop after which they will complete a related practical project which will then be tested. They will get immediate feedback, supplementary theoretical instruction and then re-do or improve the project until it reaches the standard required. This may require several attempts and will provide many opportunities for the student to learn trouble shooting skills and to improve their general electrical installation skills.
The student will complete several of these projects.
Module Assessment Strategies
The student will be assessed on a combination of events
1. Final exam
2. Folder of completed Schematics
3. Workshop projects.
The Student must pass each of the above elements.
Repeat Assessments
Because of the nature of the subject the student has to pass the practical (Workshop) element of the module. If this part is not passed the student must repeat attend.

This 3rd edition of 'Advanced Electrical Installation Work' has been updated to cover all aspects of the City and Guilds Part 2 syllabus with the same clarity which made the previous two editions such successes. Using his concise and practical approach the author updates existing material in line with amendments to the 16th IEE regulations as well as changes brought about by privatisation of the electricity supply industry. There are also new sections on quality assurance, customer care and legislation. The text is liberally reinforced with clear illustrations, and many worked examples and exercises with answers allow students to work effectively during self-directed study. This 3rd edition of 'Basic Electrical Installation Work' has been fully updated to cover all aspects of the City and Guilds Part 1 syllabus with the same clarity which made the previous two editions such successes. However, the text is fully adapted for NVQ courses and, as such, is essential reading for all students of electrical installation. Using his concise and practical approach the author updates existing material in line with amendments to the 16th IEE regulations as well as changes brought about by the privatisation of the elecricity supply industry. There are also new sections on quality assurance, customer care and legislation.
