Teaching will consist of a1 hour lecture weekly.

Online delivery of 2 hour workshop weekly, where students will be directed to complete interactive type activities to enhance their study skills and knowledge.

Live and recorded lecturers will be used with the opportunity for question and answers on an interactive basis.  

A variety of methods of instruction such as discussion, group work, interactive exercises, use of online resources and/or use of audio/visual material will be provided. Core skills will be embedded into all modules to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. This may include academic writing, oral presentations, reading techniques or research abilities. Accessible materials will be provided to students, including slides, documents, audio/visual material and textbooks enabling students slow down speed up recordings etc in accordance with universal distance learning.

All module content will be based on the principles of UDL to ensure equitable access to content and learning.

Assessment consists of a final exam 50% and continuous assessment cumulating to 50%.

Continuous assessment in the form of moodle quizzes based on multiple choice and long answer questions will also be used.  

Final examination must be passed to ensure successful completion of the module.

Students will be assessed in a variety of ways including multiple methods of assessment e.g. technology-enhanced assessment, presentations, projects, MCQ and LAQ.

Students will be given feedback and time to implement feedback in additional assessments to allow for improved CA submission.

Repeat examinations will be set, repeat CA where necessary will consist of essay type assignments on current and relevant topics. 

This module is designed to introduce students to the area of infectious disease and its relationship with health and public health safety. Communicable diseases will be studied with causative pathogens of bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic nature outlined. Students will learn the important factors associated with the development of infectious disease and preventative control measures. Firstly students must learn the basics of microbiology in order to understand the mechanisms of infectious disease. Key areas of microbial transmission such as nosocomial, food-borne and waterborne will also be studied highlighting how each route relates to the varying infective species. the deleterious impact of infectious disease on the host in terms of nutrient depletion and immune response will also be outlined. the importance of good nutrition and hygiene will also be outlined.
