Description

The module will introduce and allow students to apply metrological concepts.  It wil allow students to interpret and apply geometric tolerancing and dimensioning.  The application of coordinate measuring machines will also be examined.  The module will enable students to predict the properties of engineering alloys based on material composition and heat treatment.  They will then employ materials testing methods to measure these properties and examine engineering components for flaws. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Predict alloy microconstituent fractions,  microstructures and phases based on composition and heat treatment.

2.

Select heat treatment processes and material compositions to create specific material properties including strength, toughness and hardness, especially of tool materials.

3.

Employ materials tests, including non-destructive tests, to determine material properties and component flaws.

4.

Describe and apply basic metrological concepts such as precision, accuracy, bias, resolution, repeatability and reproducibility; metrological measurements using optical methods and measurement of surface finish.

5.

Interpret and apply tolerancing, including geometric dimensioning & tolerancing.

6.

Examine and apply the use of coordinate measuring machines in metrology.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Fulltime
The theoretical and background material will be presented through a series of lectures. Application of the theory will be demonstrated in class and understanding demonstrated through ongoing laboratory sessions and assignments.

Online
This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques. The theoretical and background material will be presented through a series of online lectures. Application of the theory will be demonstrated through an end of semester laboratory session and ongoing assignments.

Module Assessment Strategies

Theory and some applied elements will be assessed in a final exam.  Practical elements will be assessed based on laboratory and written reports.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment will involve a final exam and resubmission of reports or practicals as determined by the lecturer.

Phase transformations & isothermal diagrams
Heat treatment of steels & hardenability

Metrology basic concepts : units, precision & accuracy, bias, resolution, discrimination, linearity, stability, repeatability & reproducibility

Measurement using optical methods and of surface finish
