Description

In this module, the learner will investigate a variety of visualisation concepts and tools for analysing data sets. The student will gain an understanding of the core skills in data visualisation and the tools available. The will gain knowledge in how to select appropriate visualisation methods based on the data and target audience and create visualisations using appropriate software packages. The use and creation of dashboards will also be explored. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Create compelling and effective dashboards using an appropriate collection of related visualisations.

Evaluate data visualisations and outline issues and techniques applying visualisations in a health domain

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using a combination of theory based online lectures, online computer based practicals and self-study. The student's learning will be supported by a range of supplemental content available on the module page in the institutes' VLE (Moodle). This supplemental content will include notes, practical manuals and videos. 

The principles of UDL will underpin the design of all module content to ensure maximum accessibility for all learners. 

Module Assessment Strategies

The student will be assessed by means of both summative and formative assessment. The summative assessment will consist of two data visualisation projects and a set of open book moodle quizzes where the student will be examined on their theoretical knowledge of data visualisation.

The student will also have access to online self-assessment quizzes as part of the formative assessment. These quizzes will allow the student to monitor their own progress on the module as well as identify any knowledge gaps they may have.

Repeat Assessments

Where the student does not pass the modules they may be asked to re-submit one or both of the data visualisation projects and re-do the moodle quizzes.

1. Explain core skills for data Visualisation and tools available for visualisation

  • What is Data Visualisation?
  • Characteristics of Data, Data Types and Information
  • Communication through visualisation
  • Tools used for Visualisation

2. Select the appropriate data visualisation methods based on the type of data and target audience.

  • Principles of data visualisation
  • Graphical integrity
  • Clarity of data representation
  • Elements of visual design (layout, colour, fonts, labelling etc.)

3. Create visualisations using various software packages

  • Planning and designing visualisations
  • Investigation of Tools for creating appropriate data Visualisations (Tableau, Power BI, Google Charts, Excel)
  • Creating Visualisations for Numerical Data
  • Creating Visualisation for Non-Numerical Data
  • Techniques for:
    • Spatial data,
    • Geospatial data,
    • Multivariate data,
    • Trees,
    • Graphs,
    • Clusters etc.

4. Create compelling and effective dashboards using an appropriate collection of related visualisations.

  • Investigate and implement dashboard creation with Tableau/Excel
  • Show how these packages can be connected to data sources, e.g. databases. for dashboard creation

5. Evaluate data visualisations and outline issues and techniques applying visualisations in a health domain​​​​​​​

  • Investigating Pitfalls in data visualisation design
  • Compare and contrast data visualisation techniques.
