Description

The module is intended to help students to gain proficiency with the necessary skills to interpret numerical and graphical information and describe data appropriately. It will introduce basic concepts and methods of Quantitative Methods and will enable students to solve problems and make decisions using various statistical tools.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate an awareness of prominent survey designs and sampling strategies

2.

Preform calculations for measures of correlation and regression.

3.

Carry out time series analysis.

4.

Effectively use hypothesis tests for decision making.

5.

Utilise computer software in the solution of statistical problems.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The student will engage with the content of the module through lectures, tutorials and computer labs.

The student will develop and apply their learning through practical examples and exercise sheets.

The student will generate practical computer solutions in the computer labs using various software packages.

Module Assessment Strategies

Continuous assessment will consist of several in-class assessments that will allow students to demonstrate their understanding of lecture material.

Written examination at the end of the semester.

Computer solution of statistical problems will be assessed in a practical lab assessment.

Repeat Assessments

Written examination

Indicative Syllabus

1. Sampling: Use random and non-random sampling methods, procedures to be followed in conducting a sample survey. Construct confidence intervals.

2. Time Series: Factors which affect a time series, forecasting future values.

3.Regression and Correlation: Draw scatter diagrams. Calculate linear regression coefficients, calculate measures of correlation and rank correlation, use the regression line for forecasting.

4. Hypothesis Testing: One-Sample Tests of Hypothesis.

5. Data Analysis using software packages.
