MATH06040 2022 Business Mathematics and Statistics - BBS(Hons) Ab-Initio Module 2
This module will allow students on the BBS(Hons) Ab-initio programme to develop new and existing skills and knowledge and to continue transition to a third level, student centered learning style where the emphasis is on problem solving using a range of relevant mathematical methods.
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Use TIME SERIES ANALYSIS to support quantitative analysis and forecasting
Use correlation and regression techniques to determine the nature and strength of relationships in bi-variate data sets
Use probability distributions to estimate population parameters from sample statistics to specified significance levels.
Use statistical inference to test hypotheses.
Solve a range of practical business related problems using the techniques and methods learned earlier.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
The teaching and learning strategy is one which is founded on student-centered active learning. This module will be delivered by a mixture of face to face, online delivery and tutorial support as appropriate. Students will be supported in this module through the the use of various virtual learning environments.The student will develop and apply their learning through practical examples, case studies and exercise sheets.
Module Assessment Strategies
Written examination at the end of the semester and written examination & quizzes during the semester.
The repeat assessment will involve a Repeat Exam.
Normal Distribution :- Define and calculate probabilities. Describe various probability distributions. Solve problems involving the Normal probability distributions. Fundamentals of Hypotheses testing. One and two-sample tests.
- Sampling :- Use random and non-random sampling methods Outline the manner in which to conduct a sample
- Time Series :- Calculate the trend and seasonal variation of a time series using additive and multiplicative models. De seasonalise time series. Forecast from time series using graphical and correlation methods.
Regression and Correlation :- Draw scatter diagrams. Calculate product moment and rank correlation measures Calculate simple linear regression coefficients and predict values of the dependent variable.
Data Analysis :- Apply spreadsheets methods to the previous sections

"This twelfth edition of Statistics for Business and Economics is an introductory text emphasizing inference, with extensive coverage of data collection and analysis as needed to evaluate the reported results of statistical studies and make good decisions. As in earlier editions, the text stresses the development of statistical thinking, the assessment of credibility, and the value of the inferences made from data, both by those who consume and those who produce them. It assumes a mathematical background of basic algebra." --xi (Preface).
