Description

This module will allow students on the BBS(Hons) Ab-initio programme to review existing skills and knowledge and to transition to a third level, student centered learning style where the emphasis is on problem solving using a range of relevant mathematical methods.  Prospective students should have a sound foundation from second level mathematics courses in arithmetic, algebra and statistics. Continuous assessments during the module are aligned with the learning outcomes and are designed to reinforce learning.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Be proficient in the use of simple arithmetic and algebraic expressions including the evaluation of symbolic formulae, transposition of formulae, solution of first and second order algebraic equations and expressions involving logarithm and exponential functions.

2.

Summarise, analyse and interpret statistical data presented in summary and graphical forms.

3.

Apply a range of mathematical methods in the calculation of the return on and appraisal of financial investments

4.

Use Microsoft Excel spreadsheet functions to carry out calculations and to analyse summarise and present numerical statistical data in table and graph form.

5.

Solve a range of practical business related problems using the techniques and methods learned earlier.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The teaching and learning strategy is one which is founded on student-centered active learning. This module will be delivered by a mixture of face to face, online delivery and tutorial support as appropriate. Students will be supported in this module through the the use of various virtual learning environments. The student will develop and apply their learning through practical examples, case studies and exercise sheets.

Module Assessment Strategies

Normative assessment will be carried out three times during the programme.  This will happen every four weeks  Mathematical skill building will be summative.  All learning outcomes will be assessed at the end of the stage.  Assessment credit will be given for continuous participation in the programmed learning activities during the delivery of the programme module.

Repeat Assessments

The repeat assessment will involve a repeat exam.
