Description

This subject aims to provide learners with the necessary skills to gather, organize, analyse and present data.  It aims also to enable students to understand and assess quantitative information presented to them.    

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Carry out index number calculations and understand how indicies are used in material presented to them

2.

Solve probability problems and be able to use normal tables

3.

Carry out time series analysis and understand the results of such analysis when presented with it

4.

Perform calculations for measures of correlation, regression and index numbers

5.

Determine the critical path from a network diagram

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The teaching and learning strategy is one which is founded on student-centered active learning. This module will be delivered by a mixture of face to face, online delivery and tutorial support as appropriate. Students will be supported in this module through the the use of various virtual learning environments.The student will develop and apply their learning through practical examples, case studies and exercise sheets.

Module Assessment Strategies

Written examination at the end of the semester and written examination & quizzes during the semester.

 

Repeat Assessments

The repeat assessment will involve a Repeat Exam.

Indicative Syllabus

 1. Regression and Correlation

  • Draw scatter graphs
  • Calculate linear regression coefficients
  • Calculate measures of correlation and rank correlation
  • Use the regression line for forecasting

2. Time Series

  • Factors which affect a Time Series
  • Moving average trend, seasonal & cyclical variation and residuals based on the additive model
  • Deseasonalised data
  • Forecasting future values

3. Index Numbers

  • Calculate price and quantity indices
  • Change the base period of an index
  • Use a price index to deflate money values

4. Probability

  • Define and calculate probabilities, permutations and combinations
  • Solve problems involving the normal distribution

5. Network Analysis and Critical Path

  • Draw a network diagram
  • Determine the critical path
  • Calculate the floats of non-critical activities

6. Data analysis using computers

  • Apply spreadsheets to some of the previous sections
