Description

This module equips students with theoretical knowledge and insights into the challenges and opportunities of Industry 4.0, focusing on smart manufacturing, robotics, innovation, and knowledge management. Students will explore the complexities of integrating new technologies into manufacturing processes, structures, and business models to remain competitive. The module emphasises the importance of interdisciplinary skills and digital expertise for smart product and service delivery. Students will also learn to solve problems using Industry 4.0 technologies for future production chains.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Have knowledge and understanding of the role of Industry 4.0 in today’s manufacturing industries, as well as the challenges and opportunities this brings at project and management levels.

2.

Have detailed knowledge and understanding of one or more of the latest technologies of Industry 4.0.

3.

Demonstrate an understanding of the engineer’s role in the digitalized world, and how this can contribute to the transformation of manufacturing environments towards Smart Factories.

4.

Analyze and interpret data from a real world disruptive digitization problem, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

5.

Recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in the use of Industry 4.0, and make informed judgments, considering the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

In this module students will attend lectures, which will include case studies and guest lectures. There will also be industrial visits. These will all help to explain and demonstrate the principles and application of Industry 4.0.

Module Assessment Strategies

The module is 100% CA and submissions will consist of the following:

  • A report (80%) of 2,000 words analysing and discussing a case study;
  • A presentation (20%) of the findings.

Repeat Assessments

The learners must pass all the continuous assessment elements of the module.

Where a learner fails the CA element of the module they will be required to resubmit their report and copy of the presentation.
