LITT06002 2017 Writing and Practice 1
This module is an introduction to writing practice. Learners will be exposed to and practice writing in multiple forms: life writing, article writing, and fiction. The module will focus on the elements of style, avoiding cliché and finding a strong narrative voice regardless of genre. Consideration will be given to how elements of fictional storytelling (character, plot, dialogue, language) are integral to other writing practices. Activities include in-class writing, workshop, technique-specific practices, reading, group discussion, and more.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
understand and apply the conventions of writing craft
apply varied techniques of writing non-fiction and fiction
critique writing and receive critique constructively
revise writing in terms of both language and concepts
prepare a portfolio of original texts that represent a range of writing formats (approx. 3000 words total)
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This is a workshop environment both teacher and learner led. The visiting writer will provide guidance and techniques and learners will be encouraged to share feedback and critique. Through reading, writing, discussion and writer led presentations, learners will participate in a varied and vibrant learning environment.
Module Assessment Strategies
Assessment strategy is 100% continuous assessment and designed to help learners maximise writing opportunities and to give and receive feedback to work towards revision. Learners will submit multiple forms of written work over the term and submit a final portfolio representative of their writing process over the semester.
Repeat Assessments
Learners who fail the module will be provided with the opportunity to repeat the assessment
Indicative Syllabus
Introduction to Writing Practice
Elements of Style - Students introduced to technical aspects of writing with emphasis on clarity, avoiding cliché and other techniques of good writing. Use of detail and building authority of voice in writing.
Narratives - Students will look at how narrative and storytelling are integral to all writing forms. Emphasis will be on use of storytelling and narrative in non-fiction and other forms of writing
Story and plot- Use of story arc, examination of plot elements in different writing formats
Point of View – exploration of point of view in narrative including first, second and third person point of views. The relationship between point of view and the world created. Use of unreliable narrators.
Characters – how to build character through gesture and action
Dialogue – use of dialogue in building characters and world. Use of dialogue in non-fiction. When to use dialogue to reveal character
Memoir – life writing and fictional strategies in writing memoir
Fact and Fiction – discussion of accuracy in non-fiction and the line between fiction and non-fiction
Being Edited and Editing – macro and micro editing. Self-editing and revision of work.
