LANG08033 2021 French Language, Culture and Contemporary Media 4.1
This module builds on the previous years of language studies and equips the student with linguistic skills to communicate in French at CEFR Level B2. The module develops the student's appreciation of and sensitivity to cultural, social and economic issues relevant to Francophone societies. It also develops the student's individual capacity to carry out independent research in French.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
consolidate progress to CEFR Level B2 and those who have spent a semester/year abroad in the country where the target language is spoken may be working towards Level C1
communicate and interpret the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussion in his/her field of specialisation
manage communication with a degree of fluency and spontaneity (higher in those who have lived in a country in which French is spoken) which makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party
produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issues giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options
assess and appraise various historical, political and social issues relevant to France and start to acquire an awareness of other countries across the globe where French is spoken
Teaching and Learning Strategies
- Active classroom participation
- Use of computer laboratory to access contemporary online learning platforms and websites which impart linguistic and cultural information
- Encouragement of collaboration with Erasmus students who are native speakers of the language whether through project collaboration, a buddy system, social outings or other means preferred by the students.
- Improvement through sustained practice of grammar, reading and writing skills appropriate to the level.
- Reinforcement of key skills through consistent self-study and independent reading and research.
Module Assessment Strategies
Linguistic ability will be assessed in:
- simulations
- oral interviews
- projects (written & oral presentations)
- written tests
- written emails
- translations
ONGOING = Every TWO To FOUR weeks, assessment in these areas will occur using the strategies above
These assessments measure students at B2 level

Indicative Syllabus
Listening:
Can understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar. Can understand most TV news and current affairs programmes. Can understand a lot of film dialogue if in standard dialect.
Reading:
Can read articles & reports concerned with contemporary problems in which writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints. Can understand contemporary literary prose.
Spoken interaction:
Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible. Can take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining one's views. Can self-correct when speaking.
Spoken production:
Can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to my field of interest. Can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
Writing:
Can write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to my interests/field of specialisation. Can write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. Can write emails highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences.
