respond and comment on the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

communicate in a broad range of situations most likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken and describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans while demonstrating awareness of correct accent and intonation

compose independently  simple, connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest while implementing a level of grammatical accuracy appropriate to the level

present  an "oral" presentation of a project, presentation or similar to relate and appraise contemporary  German Culture and Media

Active Learning is encouraged and participation is facilitated  through small class size, role-play and e-learning activities via Moodle, the Virtual Learning Environment. The use of simple authentic texts ( abridged and use of sub-titles) with audio and audio-visual materials provides an introduction to modern media in German/Austria and underpins the contemporary focus of relevant topics. Encouragement to organise conversation and social events with native speakers ( e.g. Erasmus students from German speaking countries). Tandem Learning Initiative with Hochschule Brandenburg, February 2021 is an example of this active collaboration.

Listening: can understand with increasing ease the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc; can grasp the main point of brief radio or TV programmes on matters of persona, global or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.

Reading: with increasing ease can understand and comment on texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language; can understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in shorter texts building on Level 3.1; can demonstrate some awareness of different registers of simple written text.

Spoken interaction: can deal with a relatively broad range of situations most likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; can enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (family, hobbies, work, travel and current events).

Spoken production: can connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions; can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans; in simple terms can briefly narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or film, and describe one's own reaction to it.

Writing: can write simple connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, and which are covered under "reading skills"; can compose personal letters/e-mails describing experiences and impressions using simple direct language.

Cultural awareness: orally present findings from cultural research at Level 3.1.
