LANG06114 2021 German Language, Culture and Contemporary Media 2.2
This module expands on the range of skills attained in Semester 3 so that the student should be equipped to perform at CEFR Level A2. Insight into German-speaking cultures and societies continues in tandem with the student's developing language skills. Contemporary media, authentic text, video clips and film will be used. This module also serves as preparation for those students who may choose to spend one or two Semesters studying at an Erasmus partner institution in Germany during Year 3.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
perform with increasing conficence at CEFR Level A2
recall and use without assistance frequently used expressions related to immediate familiar situations: family, education, social life, interests etc.
Employ and role-play situations which are likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
compose with greater confidence and independence simple written text on topics which are familiar and of personal/professional interest.
use and reference contemporary media platforms to explore and report on the cultures and traditions of German speaking societies.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
- Active classroom participation
- Use of computer laboratory to access contemporary online learning platforms and websites which impart linguistic and cultural information
- Encouragement of conversation and social events with international students who are native speakers of the language. Tandem Learning Initiative with Hochschule Brandenburg, February 2021 is an example of this active collaboration.
- Encouragement through sustained practice of reading and writing skills appropriate to the level.
- Reinforcement of language skills through self-study.

Indicative Syllabus
Listening: can understand without assistance frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance, e.g.basic personal and family information, shopping, travel, local geography and employment. Can grasp the gist of recorded material appropriate to this level.
Reading: with the aid of pre-learned vocabulary can expand reading ability of simple or abridged texts relating to everyday and simple professional interests, and to cultural and social matters of relevance.
Spoken Interaction: can communicate effectively in simple and routine tasks requiring a clear and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters, and on matters related to the student's programme of study.
Spoken Production: using appropriate prompts, can employ existing language skills to describe in simple terms aspects of one's background, immediate environment, student life and ambitions for the immediate future.
Writing: can compose with some independence simple connected text on subjects covered in oral skills and begin to enlarge written vocabulary.
Culture and Society: can continue to explore preferred websites and diverse media to expand cultural knowledge, knowledge of the education system in Germany and an understanding of daily life.
