Description

This module will continue to progress the student towards the acquisition of general language skills at CEFR Level A1. Cultural issues will continue to be explored through similar media as in Semester 1. On completion of this Semester, the student will be equipped to perform with a level of confidence at CEFR Level A1.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

continue progress towards achieving competence at  CEFR Level A1 (Basic User).

2.

employ an increased range of sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g.  basic personal and family information; shopping; local geography; employment

3.

introduce oneself and others; ask and answer varied questions about personal details and describe in very simple terms his/her background, immediate environment, social and personal interests.

4.

role-play in a simple way provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly, and is prepared to help

5.

recall and discuss geography of German-speaking countries and exlain some key cultural aspects of these countries

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Active Learning and Participation is encouraged and facilitated through small class size, role-play and e-learning activities via Moodle and the Virtual Learning Environment. The use of simple authentic texts (abridged) and use of sub-titles with audio and audio-visual materials expands the student's experience of contemporary language learning media and equally underpins the contemporary focus of relevant topics. 

Module Assessment Strategies

Linguistic ability will be assessed in:

  • role-plays and oral presentations
  • oral interview
  • written tests
  • listening tests
  • project/presentation

ONGOING = Every TWO To FOUR  weeks, assessment in these areas will occur through Oral/Aural/Written work and/or Role-play

These assessments  measure student progress to A1 level

Indicative Syllabus

Listening:  can recognise familiar words and  phrases concerning oneself, one's family and immediate concrete surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly; displays improved listening skills using a range of contemporary language-learning media platforms.
Reading: can progress to short simple texts using pre-learned vocabulary; can find predictable information in everyday material - e.g. menus, time-tables
Spoken interaction: can interact in a simple way provided the other person is prepared to repeat or rephrase things and to give help reformulating what is being said; can ask and answer simple but varied questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics
Spoken production: can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters
Writing: demonstrate awareness of grammatical accuracy appropriate to the level
Cultural Awareness and inter-cultural communication - complete a project on a chosen aspect of life in a German speaking country or region.
