The aim of this module is to examine the issues and challenges of managing people in a dynamic environment.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Appreciate the evolution of Human Resource Management.
Analyse Human Resource Planning in the context of Strategic Management.
Conduct a review of advanced recruitment & selection methods.
Design a Rewards Package that facilitates Talent Management.
Debate contemporary issues facing practicing managers.

- Overview of Human Resource Management:
- Review the historical development of Human Resource Management.
- Differentiate between HRM and Personnel Management.
- Distinguish between HRM as a specialist and as a line manager function.
- Define HR Planning and appraise its purpose.
- Explain the planning process.
- Debate Staregic HRM models e.g. Schuler, Porter, Guest.
- Define, calculate and interpret labour turnover.
- Define, calculate and interpret absenteeism.
- Examine diversity of approaches to recruitment & selection process.
- Assess on-line recruitment and selection.
- Reserach the advantages & disadvantages of contemporary practices e.g. assessment centres, psychometric testing, profiling.
- Appreciate the components of a reward package.
- Analyse rewards in the context of the process theories of motivation.
- Investigate professional development & Talent Management.
- Explore Coaching & Mentoring.
- Debate "money" as a motivator.
- Debate current issues facing line managers: flexible work patterns, atypical employment, outsourcing, compliance, ethical considerations and social responsibility.
