Description

The aim of this module is to examine the issues and challenges of managing people in a dynamic environment. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Appreciate the evolution of Human Resource Management.

2.

Analyse Human Resource Planning in the context of Strategic Management.

3.

Conduct a review of advanced recruitment & selection methods.

4.

Design a Rewards Package that facilitates Talent Management. 

5.

Debate contemporary issues facing practicing managers.

Indicative Syllabus

  1. Overview of Human Resource Management: 
  • Review the historical development of Human Resource Management.
  •  Differentiate between HRM and Personnel Management. 
  • Distinguish between HRM as a specialist and as a line manager function. 
      2. Human Resource Planning:
  • Define HR Planning and appraise its purpose.
  •  Explain the planning process.
  • Debate Staregic HRM models e.g. Schuler, Porter, Guest.
  • Define, calculate and interpret labour turnover.
  •  Define, calculate and interpret absenteeism. 
     3. Advanced Recruitment & Selection
  • Examine diversity of approaches to recruitment & selection process.
  • Assess on-line recruitment and selection.
  • Reserach the advantages & disadvantages of contemporary practices e.g. assessment centres, psychometric testing, profiling.
     4. Reward Management:
  • Appreciate the components of a reward package.
  • Analyse rewards in the context of the process theories of motivation.
  • Investigate professional development & Talent Management.
  • Explore Coaching & Mentoring.
  • Debate "money" as a motivator.
      5. Current Issues:
  • Debate current issues facing line managers: flexible work patterns, atypical employment, outsourcing, compliance, ethical considerations and social responsibility.
