This module is designed to provide students with a critical understanding of key people management processes and practices in organisations. The module addresses performance management, reward management, employee engagement and the key players in the employment relationship.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Evaluate different methods of performance management in organisations.
Appreciate the role of remuneration and reward and its link to performance.
Describe strategies to promote employee engagement.
Discuss the role of key players in the employment relationship.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
The student will engage with the content of the module through lectures, case studies, problem based learning and use of interactive multi-media tools.
Module Assessment Strategies
Written research report, oral presentation and end of semester examination will be used as appropriate for assessment.

Indicative Syllabus
1. Managing and appraising employee behaviour:
- Describe the nature of performance management;
- Examine performance management schemes in organisations;
- Explore the pitfalls of performance management;
- Examine how to manage underperformance at work.
2. Job evaluation and remuneration:
- Examine the objectives of a reward package;
- Describe the various approaches to job evaluation;
- Consider pay as a motivator;
- Examine the characteristics of effective reward systems.
3. Employee Engagement:
- Explain the concept of employee engagement;
- Outline how organisation measure employee engagement;
- Describe the benefits of an engaged workforce;
- Examine strategies to help managers create a culture of employee engagement.
4. Key Players in the Employment Relationship:
- Describe the role of trade unions in employee relations;
- Describe the role of employer associations;
- Examine the role of the state as a provider of dispute resolution machinery.
