Description

The research project will allow the learner to investigate an area of interest relevant to Sports and Exercise Nutrition, using knowledge skills and competencies acquired at earlier stages of the Master’s Programme, to research an area deemed appropriate by an academic Supervisor. The type and style of the research project will be decided in consultation and collaboration with the student's research supervisor.

Students will examine and define the issues/research question, develop a research proposal, select and execute appropriate methodologies, analyse data, evaluate findings critically and draw justifiable conclusions, demonstrating self-direction and originality of thought. The learner will be allocated a supervisor who will advise on the direction of the work.  The work will culminate with the submission of a research thesis, poster presentation and a viva voce.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Develop a research methodology and project plan for a research project.

2.

Plan and implement self-directed learning to further knowledge and understanding of a relevant area.

3.

Critically examine literature and draw inferences from this body of knowledge.

4.

Select and apply a range of standard and specialised research or equivalent tools and techniques of enquiry to the research project

5.

Interpret, critique and synthesise data that is state of the art in a relevant area.

6.

Demonstrate the validity of the research process undertaken.

7.

Produce a minor thesis/project that details and evaluates the work undertaken and justifies the conclusions reached in a format appropriate to a level 9 award.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The thesis is an independent research project that will involve self‑directed learning. This is a learner‑centered approach, where the learner will assume the responsibility for learning.  Students will avail of one to one supervision with a designated supervisor. A list of project titles and supervisors is made available at the end of the previous semester. Learners also have the option to propose their own projects, the suitability of which will be determined by the supervisor. Students will manage their time effectively to ensure that they maintain contact with their supervisor while also completing their project work. Regular meetings with their supervisor will engage the student in discussion which will focus and challenge them on hypothesis and approaches to their research design and implementation.

Module Assessment Strategies

Assessment of this module will be based on:

  1. Preparation of a project plan
  2. Submission of a final thesis/project (10-12K words)
  3. Oral examination after submission of the project report
  4. Oral and poster presentation after submission of the project report

Repeat Assessments

Where a learner fails this module the Examiners will identify where the deficits in learning occurred. The learner will then have an opportunity to address these deficits and resubmit the project for a full re-examination, the next time this module is examined

Indicative Syllabus

Students will complete a research project which may be undertaken in a variety of modes as deemed suitable by the programme board.  .

Students will develop the skills required to manage and organise a minor project. They will appraise and assess existing theories and present the findings and conclusions of their work in a formal report. The report will include a literature review on the current state of the art in the project area.

Each project will usually have a strong central core:

  • Defining the research question
  • Literature review
  • Research methodologies
  • Data interpretation and analysis
  • Critical appraisal
  • Generation of a thesis/project
  • Poster and oral presentation
