Description

This module introduces students to the basic principles of research design for quantitative studies in epidemiology. The strengths and weaknesses of various study designs will be discussed and students will gain an understanding of the process of ensuring rigour at all stages of the research process. Students will experience developing research proposal as well as the development of a data collection instrument. Students will also reflect on quality and ethical issues in relation to quantitative research.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Design a research proposal that is appropriate to a quantitiative methodology and demostrates an understanding of basic principles of epidemiological research.

2.

Design appropriate study data collection instrument relevant to a specific study

3.

Effectively communicate an informed scientific argument for choice of research design in an epidemiological study

4.

Use project management  tools in the development of a research proposal satisfying quality and ethical guidelines.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The educational elements will be provided by the Institute of Technology Sligo

Additional lecturing, as required, may be provided by outside specialists and practitioners

Online delivery is proposed with student exposed to a blend of learning activities including  synchronous and asynchronous delivery of lectures, online tutorials and reflective tasks. Chunking will be used providing short videos of smaller amounts of content which will be available on the moodle site. Additional materials will be provided on moodle.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% CA.

A number of continuous assessment tasks will be provided throughout the semester. These will incorporate theory and practical elements which are both group and individual based. Students will be assessed on skills in research instrument design and  an ability to developing research proposal which demonstrates learning on the programme content including research designs, developing appropriate research questions and hypotheses and minimising bias and ensuring ethical practical throughout the research cycle.

Repeat Assessments

The repeat assessment strategy will  be dependent on overall grades and will be decided and documented at the Progression and Award Boards.

The programme allows students to progress to a next stage if they have failed to attain the pass mark for a particular module. A student may be allowed to carry up to 10 credits into a new stage.  This policy is at the discretion of the examination board.

The Fifth Edition of Floyd J. Fowler Jr.s bestselling Survey Research Methods presents the very latest methodological knowledge on surveys. Offering a sound basis for evaluating how each aspect of a survey can affect its precision, accuracy, and credibility, the book guides readers through each step of the survey research process. This fully updated edition addresses the growth of the Internet for data collection and the subsequent rapid expansion of online survey usage, the precipitous drop in response rates for telephone surveys, the continued improvement in techniques for pre-survey evaluation of questions, and the growing role of individual cell phones in addition toand often instead ofhousehold landlines. Throughout the book, the author puts the profound changes taking place in the survey research world today into perspective, helping researchers learn how to best use new and traditional options for collecting data.

I applaud [this] book for providing a much needed overview of the entire behavioral intervention pipeline. It fills a unique niche in its coverage of key theoretical and methodological aspects as well as its case examples and professional development considerations, which makes the content accessible and practical for a broad audience. -Marcia Ory, PhD From the Foreword This unique text provides comprehensive coverage of one of the most neglectedyet vitally important--areas of public health research: developing, evaluating, and implementing novel behavioral interventions in service and practice settings. Written for Masters- and Doctoral-level courses as well as novice and expert researchers in this area, the book examines the most critical issues surrounding this form of research in order to maximize the ability of intervention researchers to successfully implement current and future evidence-based protocols in practice settings. Expert contributors embrace key challenges the complexities of health care delivery, disease management and prevention, rising costs, and changing population demographicsin shaping the push toward advancing more efficient and effective behavioral interventions and methodologies. Tackling numerous topics that have been neglected in traditional randomized trial handbooks, methodology texts, and books on dissemination and implementation science, the book addresses: ways to develop and advance an intervention, emerging hybrid trial designs - theories and new models for integrating behavioral interventions with implementation science - - recruitment and retention strategies for inclusion of diverse samples - research designs for different stages of intervention development - treatment fidelity models and measures - novel measurement and analytic strategies - cost analyses - selection of control groups - use of mixed methodology - ethics and informed consent - technology-based intervention approaches professional considerations.
