HLTH09009 2019 Qualitative and Mixed Methods for Health Research
This module will explore the concepts involved in establishing and collecting qualitative and mixed methods research data in a variety of health, educational and community settings.Students will reflect on the quality of published qualitative research and learn about the importance of rigour in qualitative research. Students will develop research questions suited to qualitative and mixed methods and be involved in collecting qualitative data and the initial stages of analysis.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Design a research proposal that is appropriate to qualitative or mixed methods approaches and demonstrates an understanding of the basic principles of qualitative/mixed methods research methodologies.
Collect and conduct an initial analysis of qualitative data which is appropriate to a qualitative research question.
Critically consider the different ways to combine qualitative and quantitative research in a mixed method study.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
The educational elements will be provided by the Institute of Technology Sligo
Additional lecturing, as required, may be provided by outside specialists and practitioners
Online delivery is proposed with student exposed to a blend of learning activities including synchronous and asynchronous delivery of lectures, online tutorials and reflective tasks. Chunking will be used providing short videos of smaller amounts of content which will be available on the moodle site. Additional materials will be provided on moodle
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 100% CA. There is no terminal examination.
A number of continuous assessment tasks will be provided throughout the semester. These will incorporate theory and practical elements which are both group and individual based. Students will be reviewing existing qualitative research, demonstrating skills in data collection and early analysis as well as developing a framework for a new research project based on mixed methods.
Repeat Assessments
The repeat assessment strategy will be dependent on overall grades and will be decided and documented at the Progression and Award Boards.
The programme allows students to progress to a next stage if they have failed to attain the pass mark for a particular module. A student may be allowed to carry up to 10 credits into a new stage. This policy is at the discretion of the examination board.
