Description

The Student will learn about the the process of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) which includes how to form a research question, search for relevant  evidence, the subsequent analysis and synthesis of the findings and the dissemination and implementation of these findings. Students will also examine how to incorporate practitioner experience and service user views into their evidence based practice. This module will equip also students with the key competencies and skills required to source, critically appraise and communicate evidence within the health, wellness, health promotion and public health area.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate an understanding of core epidemiological principles relevant for critical appraisal of epidemiological studies.

2.

Intelligently source and critically appraise and synthesise evidence pertaining to health, wellness, health promotion and public health

3.

Develop strategies and utilise frameworks for putting evidence based research into practice

4.

Critically discuss how evaluations can be designed to contribute to practice informed evidence in health promotion.

5.

Communicate evidence at appropriate level in a variety of settings and to different population groups across the lifespan

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The educational elements will be provided by the Institute of Technology Sligo

Additional lecturing, as required, may be provided by outside specialists and practitioners

Online delivery is proposed with student exposed to a blend of learning activities including  synchronous and asynchronous delivery of lectures, online tutorials and reflective tasks. Chunking will be used providing short videos of smaller amounts of content which will be available on the moodle site. Additional materials will be provided on moodle.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module will be assessed on the basis of 100% continuous assessment

Students will be assessed through various assessment processes including some or all of the following; critical appraisal tasks, evidence searching and writing, communication based projects and writing literature reviews.

Repeat Assessments

This programme allows students to progress to a next stage if they have a failed to attain the pass mark for a particular module.  A student may be allowed to carry up to 10  credits into a new stage.  This policy is at the discretion of the examination board

Inter-professional education that begins in undergraduate or graduate-entry programs has been accepted by universities as a proven method for fostering collaborative practice among health professionals yet there are few truly multidisciplinary books about evidence-based practice that meet the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in inter-professional courses. Evidence-based Practice across the Health Professions is designed to meet this need. It provides the reader with an excellent foundation in the knowledge and skills necessary to perform and understand the implications of evidence-based practice within a healthcare environment. It discusses the critical role of clinical reasoning and includes a range of practical strategies to facilitate shared decision making and effective communication with clients for improved client outcomes.

Since publication of the first three editions of this hugely successful book, systematic methods of critical appraisal have been accepted as central to healthcare provision, both in critical applications and in a wider health services and community perspective. This new edition builds on thework of the previous editions by presenting a fully updated and accessible system of critical appraisal applicable to clinical, epidemiological, and public health studies, and related fields. The book outlines the systematic review process for the establishment of causal effect within single and multiple studies. Focusing primarily on study design, it covers randomized and non-randomized trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, and surveys, showing the presentation of resultsincluding person-time and survival analysis, and issues in the selection of subjects. It then describes the process of detection and assessment of selection biases, observation bias, confounding, chance variation, and how to determine internal validity and external validity (generalizability).Statistical methods are presented in an accessible way, illustrating applications to each study design. Positive features of causation including strength, dose-response, and consistency are also discussed. The final chapters provide six examples of critical appraisals of major studies, encompassing randomized trials, prospective and retrospective cohort studies, and case-control studies. Statistical issues are explained clearly without complex mathematics, and the most useful methods are summarized inthe appendix, each with a worked example. Each main chapter includes self-test questions, with answers provided, making the book ideally suited to readers with no prior epidemiological or statistical knowledge.Developed over four editions, Critical Appraisal of Epidemiological Studies and Clinical Trials is an invaluable aid to the effective assessment of new studies in epidemiology, public health, research methods, evidence-based methods, clinical medicine, and environmental health; making it essentialreading for postgraduates, practitioners, and policymakers in these fields.
