Description

This module focuses on core topics that impact on one's health both positively and negatively.  During this module students will gain a detailed knowledge and understanding of core health practices and the impact they have on health.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of the concepts,  principles and theories of health promotion with specific reference to topics affecting health.

2.

Critically appraise current research regarding topics that impact on health both positively and negatively.

3.

Have detailed knowledge of current health issues of concern to society and their impact on health status.

4.

Source, interpret and apply appropriate and referenced health related literature from current evidence base regarding a wide range of topics that impact on health.

5.

Recognise and respect the views of others in terms of health risk practices.

6.

Plan for the conductance of an effective health campaign addressing  a specific health topic and communicating the message effectively to a college based audience.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will learn by means of practical workshops each week 

These workshops will involve reflective practice and experiential learning

Module Assessment Strategies

Assessment will take place by means of a number of assessments;

1 Healthy Campus Awareness Campaign

2 Brief Intervention Health Workshop on a specific topic area

Repeat Assessments

Students will have to repeat attend the module if elements are not successfully completed

Overview of health, health promotion and competencies for health promotion practitioners

Overview of relevant health related strategies, policy and legislation pertaining to specific health related topics

Focus on various Health Risk Behaviours (HRB) e.g. Excessive Alcohol Consumption, Tobacco Use, Poor Diet, Mental ill health, Unsafe Sexual Health Practices, Excessive Screen time

Focus on Health Protective Behaviours (HPB) e.g. Medical self responsibility,  Being Physically Active, Breastfeeding, Mental Health, Sexual Health, Health Diet & Nutritional Practices

Focus on maintaining and promoting HPB and reversing HRB strategies and methods
