HLTH08038 2019 Health Promotion Competencies
This module aims to give students experience in developing their competencies for health promotion action using the International Union of Health Promotion Competencies framework. Students will engage with the competencies through professional development planning, concrete experience in volunteering, interviewing practitioners in the field and conducting a situational assessment. The model will emphasise the importance of reflective practice and identification of ongoing professional development.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Reflect on their competencies using the IUHPE competencies in health promotion framework
Create a professional development plan which identifies specific actions which the students will undertake to strengthen his/her competencies in health promotion.
Conduct a situational assessment which shows key skills in group work, research, planning, partnership, leadership and communication.
Analyze how a health promotion practitioner uses various competencies in their role.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
The IUHPE Competencies for Health Promotion are central to this module. Students will be presented with theories and examples in lectures. Practicals will use interactive methodologies and practice-based examples to engage students to develop their skills and insight into health promotion competencies. These competencies will be central to the development of students own professional development plans which incorporates volunteering (15 hours). Students will interview a practitioner to get insights of the competencies in practice. Students will have opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills to the conducting a practical based situational assessment.
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 100% continuous assessment.
A number of different assessment strategies will be incorporated into this module.
Students will be assessed on the following
- Development of their situational assessment - through group report and updates
- Individual report on their interview with a practitioner.
- Processional Development plan and achievement of the self directed goals.
- Learning journal including reflections relating to all aspects of the programme.
