HLTH08035 2019 Qualitative Research Methodologies
This module will focus on current research in the health promotion public health field. It will build on the knowledge acquired in Research Methods 1 & 2 and seek to develop skills in qualitative research methods. Students will be introduced to different paradigms in research and a variety of approaches to qualitative research. Students will be given opportunities to develop research questions suited to qualitative research. Students will be introduced to using focus groups in qualitative research and will design and moderation focus groups, analyse data using thematic analysis and report their findings.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Identify appropriate research methodologies for a given research question.
Conduct a focus group showing an understanding of skills for collecting qualitative data.
Analyse data from a focus group using thematic analysis and present their findings.
Be able to appraise a qualitative research paper or report.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Teaching will incorporate lectures and practicals. The lectures will give the students the theory of qualitative research and an overview of some practical skills in conducting focus groups, analysing data and writing reports.
Practicals will be focused on group qualitative research projects which students will develop over the module. Students will have opportunity to work collaboratively in the design of their focus groups and in the subsequent analysis of the data. This will be supplemented by samples of data which the students will practice their coding.
This module with link with Research Methods 1 where students will pilot their focus groups with 2nd year students from that module.
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.
Learner outcomes and assessment are linked to the performance criteria in the professional competencies for Health Promotion.
Student assessment includes assessment of specific skills of conducting research on a health issue through continuous assessment project. Every effort is made to give timely and effective feedback to students in workshops as they complete various tasks of their project including desiging, conducting and analysing focus group data.
Students will keep a learning log to note their learning related to specific tasks of their project to develop reflective practice skills and this assessment will be ongoing. .
Students are required to use Turnitin to discourage the use of plagiarism and to emphasise the importance of accurate referencing.

Electronic Inspection Copy available for instructors here Successful Qualitative Research: A Practical Guide for Beginners is an accessible, practical textbook. It sidesteps detailed theoretical discussion in favour of providing a comprehensive overview of strategic tips and skills for starting and completing successful qualitative research. Uniquely, the authors provide a 'patterns framework' to qualitative data analysis in this book, also known as 'thematic analysis'. The authors walk you through a basic thematic approach, and compare and contrast this with other approaches. This discussion of commonalities, explaining why and when each method should be used, and in the context of looking at patterns, will provide you with complete confidence for your qualitative research journey. Key features of this textbook: - Full of useful tips and strategies for successful qualitative work, for example considering the nervous student not just the beginner student. - Skills-based, utilising a range of pedagogical features to encourage you to apply particular techniques and learn from your experience. - The authors use the same dataset throughout - reproduced in full (with associated research materials) on the companion website - to help you make comparisons across different analytical approaches. - A comprehensive suite of student support materials, including practice exam questions, can be found online at www.sagepub.com/braunandclarke. This textbook will be an essential textbook for undergraduates and postgraduates taking a course in qualitative research or using qualitative approaches in a research project.
